Award winning vocalist, vibraphonist, and composer Sanne Huijbregts is no stranger to inJazz. She has astounded audiences with her melodic, inventive, and sometimes downright quirky song structures. We are happy to have her present her brand-new quartet at inJazz 2022. When she describes how she arrived at this point, she mentions not just the uphill battle during the pandemic.
“The search for this project was a long road. I started to develop myself as a percussionist, among other things. In the spring of 2021, my new compositions were ready for a project, and I cautiously started playing with some people. At rehearsal no. 1, it was clear – this is my band, these are my people. Not only because they are incredibly good musicians, but also because they understand me and my sound 100%.”
When asked to describe her new music, Sanne cites her manager: “He uses the term ‘vocal folk jazz’. I have put it this way: ‘An amalgamation of my inspirations Becca Stevens, Laura Mvula, Bon Iver, the Punch Brothers, Radiohead and many, many more, with a mix of collaborative singing, percussion, viola, bass and drums, where the story of each composition is paramount, and the asymmetrical layering keeps you awake.’ But maybe that’s exactly the definition of ‘vocal folk jazz’.”
