Ponga
Wednesday, June 26, 2024 - BIMHUIS
Viola, guitars, and percussion: this unusual combination forms the new trio, Ponga. They convey a sense that anything is possible; free improvisation lies at the heart of their music, even when compositional forms, infectious grooves, and peculiar melodies come in.
Viola player Yanna Pelser also lends her vocals to the ensemble. Her fellow bandmates, Timon Koomen (guitars) and Remco Menting (percussion), previously collaborated in the Kapok trio alongside composer and horn player Morris Kliphuis. Each member of the band is versatile, capable of taking on different musical roles—percussive, melodic, and harmonic. With fifteen years of experience, they are seasoned performers who have graced both Dutch and international jazz and classical stages in various formations.
Indeed, classical music is also part of Ponga’s rich background, complemented by a theatrical flair—you can expect outfit changes during their performances!
Remco Menting – drums, percussion
