The release of the album Methods To Madness in 2020 marked a new phase for pianist, composer, and producer Alexander van Popta. After various successes as a music director of the Re:Freshed Orchestra and as a sideman of Gregory Porter and Benjamin Herman, amongst others, this debut under his own name clearly features the influence of jazz and its improvisational character. In terms of sound and production, the band has chosen more of an alternative approach.
Alexander van Popta (1987) grew up around the record collection of his parents. He began banging on their Fender Rhodes when he was around the age of 4, but it wasn’t until 5 years later that he actually started piano lessons. He graduated from the Rotterdam Conservatory, and was taught in New York by Aaron Parks. He has performed in dozens of countries in Europe, Asia, North and South America. As an arranger, he works on a regular basis for the Metropole Orkest. He formed his band Alexander in 2019. A second album is expected in the fall of this year.
