Lucas Santana 5tet
Thursday, November 4, 2021 - BIMHUIS
Please welcome the energetic hard bop vibe of the Lucas Santana 5tet!
From the moment he set foot in the Conservatorium van Amsterdam in 2015, Brazilian saxophonist (and clarinetist, flute player) Lucas Figueiredo Santana has been playing in any group imaginable. There were trios, quartets, quintets and big bands (Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw and Metropole Orkest included), covering a wide range of jazz, blues, soul and Brazilian music. Lately, Lucas Santana’s main focus lies with his quintet, who saw their first album Reflections released in April 2021 on Zennez Records. The music for Reflections was composed and recorded during the lockdown period of 2020, and aims to deliver some of Lucas’ personal reflections of himself and of the world through his music.
Lucas is quick to mention greats like Charlie Parker, Cannonball Adderley, John Coltrane and Joe Henderson as his influences, next to players like Joshua Redman and Miguel Zenon. His music has that energetic hard bop vibe, but his Brazilian roots shine through on many levels. Over the years he has tightened the bonds with his Conservatorium buddies Davor Stehlik (guitar), Tijs Klaassen (double bass), Tim Hennekes (drums), and Timothy Banchet (piano) and the 5tet is more than ready to set fire to the stages of venues and festivals in the Netherlands and beyond.
