Sam Newbould Quintet
Wednesday, November 3, 2021 - BIMHUIS
Saxophonist Sam Newbould and his fellow band members met at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam in 2016. A common interest in cutting edge music drew them together, and Sam himself mentions influences like Radiohead, Charles Mingus, Wayne Shorter, English folk, and 20th Century classical music. Says Sam: ‘Originating from different parts of the world, each band member is deeply inspired by their heritage. We share the desire to put cultural difference at the heart of our music.’
Sam wrote the first compositions for his Quintet alone, and he was delighted when everyone shaped songs during rehearsals. To Sam, his upbringing in the North of England is an endless source of inspiration: ‘My music weaves together emotive melodies, rich and discordant harmony and progressive rock energy, creating a fresh sound that reflects the humour and drama of Northern English life.’ All this, as well as genuine feelings of home and togetherness, is abundantly present on Bogus Notus, the album that came out in March of this year, following 2019’s Blencathra. This is one more band that just can’t wait to be out there!
